About the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute

The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute is a unique organization in the City of Boston and in the nation. Founded to assist and support the families of homicide victims, the Peace Institute rapidly grew into an agency reflecting best practices in offering shelter and services to families during the most difficult times of their lives, and also became a model for nonviolence to the city that Louis D. Brown called home.
The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute's Mission is: "to create and promote an environment of peace and unity, where young people and their families are valued for their peacemaking efforts".
The foundation of our mission rests on the active use of the 7 peace principles - love, unity, faith, hope, courage, justice, and forgiveness - through direct service programs, training, and public policy advocacy.
Public policy is not driven by data alone, but also by the power of people's stories. Through trainings and by listening to survivors stories, providers and professionals deepen their understanding of needs and issues of both survivors and perpetrators and their families. The Peace Institute also partners with other social justice advocacy groups and institutions of research and higher education by providing internships, training, and other opportunities for learning from survivors.
Partnerships have included the Harvard School of Public Health, the Harvard Youth Violence Prevention Center, the American Friends Service Committee, Justice Resource Institute, Lesley University, Boston University, UMass Boston, Wheelock College, Children's Hospital, Boston Medical Center, Dorchester House Multi-Service Center, Boston Police Department Homicide Unit, Boston Public Health Commission, Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and the National Coalition of Survivors for Violence Prevention.
The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute seeks to address the root causes of violence and is committed to restorative justice practices.
